We are seeking a number of enthusiastic and committed part time workers to provide support to students with Asperger's Syndrome and other Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).
An Asperger's Mentor for students with Asperger's Syndrome and other ASD helps a student achieve their potential by listening, guiding and providing practical and emotional support. Starting in September/October 2010 you should be available to work during the academic year until June 2011.
Job Responsibilities
As an Asperger's Mentor you will be responsible for:
- Developing professional and supportive working relationships with individual students with support needs;
- Providing regular one to one support sessions to students, offering practical and emotional support by way of befriending, listening, motivating and problem-solving;
- Supporting students with organisational and time management tasks and assisting with the prioritisation of their academic workload; especially at examination times and assignment due dates.
Preferred Skills
- Strong communication skills;
- Model good communication and social interaction within each session;
- Use explicit and unambiguous language;
- Assist the student in preparing for new experiences or changes to current study or academic routines;
- Assist the student with managing their anxiety.
Personal Attributes
- Specific experience of working with adults with Asperger's Syndrome and other ASD in a Social Work, Teaching or Health setting.
- Experience of working 1:1 with an individual.
- Experience of developing strategies with people to assist them with their individual needs.
- Educated to degree level.
