NADO Inaugural Conference

Conference Proceedings
Mr John Lockwood, Dean of the Faculty of Social and Life Sciences, welcomed conference participants to the university on behalf of the Vice Chancellor and wished them every success. Mr Steve Metcalfe, conference chair, then welcomed delegates. He went on to explain that this was to be a working conference and that everyone was expected to contribute to the debate, with the objective of identifying the steps necessary to develop a national association of disability officers (NADO). Mr Metcalfe then introduced each of the four speakers in turn.
Speakers:
- Sophie Corlett, Assistant Director of Skill: Skill's Perspective on Disability Support in HE
- E A Draffan, Disability Officer and Access Centre Manager, Sussex University: In-service Professional Development
- Bernard Mallows, Secretary, Universities' Safety Association: Running a Professional Association within HE
- Sally Hunt, Assistant General Secretary, the AUT: Trade Unions and Professional Associations: Links and Contrasts in a growing Part-time, Temporary Employment Culture in HE
Workshops
In the afternoon delegates divided into three groups to engage in workshops which carried forward the individual themes of the morning talks. One member of each group then summarised the workshop findings to all delegates before the start of the plenary session.
- Workshop A (chaired by Sophie Corlett)
- Workshop B (chaired by E.A. Draffan)
- Workshops C & D, Session chaired by Bernard Mallows and Sally Hunt
Plenary Session
The aim of the plenary session was to find a mechanism of taking the process (of forming an association) forward.
